Ras Tarrenhendre Fell Race Saturday 25/1/25 12 noon
6 miles with 2000’ ascent.
WFRA Race Grade: AS/LK/PM/SER/NS.
The second race in the Meirionnydd - Winter Race Series.
Tarrenhendre provides an ideal venue for a mid-winter fell race. The circular course climbs from less than 50m asl to the 634m Tarrenhendre through forestry to a ridge that circles around and then descends into a large cwm through old slate quarries. Much of the route is on forest trail in the bottom of the cwm but 2 punishing single track climbs lead to the fell and a third exposed climb to the summit. A fine moorland descent leads to the eastern corner of the cwm. There it plunges through steep and boggy forest paths to the quarry bottom. If everything is still in working order when you get there you need a rapid change of mindset for a couple of miles of trail to get back to the start. We welcome all runners back to race HQ in Abergynolwyn Village Hall for home made soup, included in the entry and cakes, all prepared by club members and friends of MRC. Navigation on the route is straightforward and in fair weather the route is a good first race. Runners must have enough experience of winter on our hills to be able to decide for themselves if they should run in the weather on the day.
In summary, this is a real fun race with 3 challenging climbs a good stretch of open fell, a mad plunge through dark boggy forest, and a fast blast of trail running to finish!
